A law suit filed against the National Football League team san Diego Chargers by the city of San Diego has been dismissed. The two sides have further agreed to work out several accounting disputes in an out of court agreement.
The City had filed the breach of contract suit stating that the San Diego Chargers had failed to honour payment for the usage of the stadium. The city cited that the team owed it more than 170,000 dollars for use of the Qualcomm Stadium in 2004.
San Diego City attorney Jan Goldsmith said the suit was filed days before the four-year limitations expired (stipulated statute limitation period). Goldsmith added that the matter should have been handled a long time ago.
Goldsmith further congratulated the City and the San Diego Chargers for coming to an agreement; he said that the agreement was a responsible thing to do. Additionally he said that litigation is costly and usually unnecessary. Goldsmith says that he hopes that the financial analysts from both sides will come up with an agreement to avoid litigation.
After being the first NFL team to implement the Safe Ride Solutions, a program that allows drunk athletes to dial toll free numbers and they will be picked and dropped at their homes by off duty officers, Chargers defensive tackle Jamal Williams was arrested for drunken driving. This is the teams second such case implicating San Diego players in less than a month.
San Diego Raiders manager A.J. Smith said in a statement that it was so disappointing that he (Jamal) had been implicated in such a case and said that they will let the legal process take its course. She declined to comment further.
On January 6th, Vincent Jackson who had shared the Most Valuable Player with Rivers Philip was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving; this was five days before Raiders lost to Pittsburgh in playoffs. Jackson will be due in court on the February 17th. He was on probation after a previous same charge arrest.
The Raiders were awarded the Winston Shell award after implementing the Safe Ride Solutions having demonstrated dedication and commitment to developing innovative and unique solutions and ideas.
In 2006 alone, there were seven brushes with the law by San Diego Chargers players. This includes the shooting of linebacker Steve Foley by
an off-duty police officer who suspected him of driving while under the influence of alcohol. Two other players were arrested for investigation.
Other than the arrests, in 2006 linebackers Shawne Merriman and Stephen Cooper tested positive for steroids and banned stimulants respectively and were suspended for four games each.
However much dogged by controversy, the San Diego Chargers will be celebrating their 50th anniversary along with several other original American Football League teams, with this the team has designed a commemorative logo that will appear on the teams jerseys or selected merchandise.
